Prof. Rainey had personally collated the Amarna correspondence from Cairo, London, Berlin, Paris, Brussels, New York, Chicago, and Istanbul. His four-volume work on the hybrid language of the Amarna Letters from Canaan is the only work of its kind and has become a standard reference for all scholars of cuneiform and Northwest Semitic who study and teach those unique epistles. His last published work, Teaching History and Historical Geography of Bible Lands: A syllabus (Jerusalem 2011), is a most valuable gift of his knowledge and experience to future generations.
R. Steven Notley, Ph.D., is distinguished professor of Biblical Studies at the New York City campus of Nyack College and former Chairman of the Department of New Testament Studies, American Institute for Holy Land Studies. Professor Notley, who is at the cutting edge of modern New Testament research, combines his philological training with an intimate firsthand knowledge of biblical geography. In this Atlas Notley is responsible for the chapters on the Greco-Roman period. With his mentor, the late David Flusser, he collaborated on the historical biography of Jesus (Jerusalem 1997, 2001), and with Ze'evSafrai, he collected and annotated the Parables of the Sages: Jewish Wisdom from Jesus to RavAshi in Hebrew and also provided the translation for the Hebrew-English edition (Jerusalem 2011). He is also the editor for the collected studies, Jerusalem Studies in the Synoptic Gospels (Leiden 2005).
